Overturned Gay Marriage Ban

We asked you about the California Supreme Court's ruling on gay marriage.

It's simple. Read the bible. What are we telling our kids with this? That it is OK. It is not OK.  -  Martin, San Diego

it is a sad for Calif when our courts disregard Gods design for marriage.  -  Tom, Mira Mesa

I truly feel that no matter how you look at it constitutionaly, it will always come back to being a moral issue. You can't take out the religous aspect out no matter how many ways you look at it.  -  Jeff, San Diego

I have one question...why do we bother voting anymore?! The judges have WAY more power than ever intended. Is this still a democracy?  -  Jennifer, Lemon Grove

It's one thing to accord same-sex relationships some sort of legal acceptance, for medical, financial, inheritance and other legal reasons, but DON'T CALL THIS RELATIONSHIP "MARRIAGE"!  -  *** and Dottie, Serra Mesa

I am very pleased with the court ruling on same-sex marriage. My take on things is that if same-sex couples don't affect your life style or are harmful to you, they should be left alone to live their life style as they please. Marriage is about COMMITMENT not gender. I have a few gay friends, and today they felt like they had a weight lifted from their shoulders and now feel more free to express themselves.  -  Marisol, Imperial Beach

a marriage is between a man and a woman and this is a law of nature. if u break the law of nature, u will face the consequences down the road. i would never agree on gay marriage. thank-you.  -  Patrick, Rancho Penasquitos

this is not right what they did today. if i wanted to marry a minor(girl under 18 in California)why couldn't i? could i complain that I'm not receiving equal rights? i read this on a website "California already offers same-sex couples who register as domestic partners the same legal rights and responsibilities as married spouses, including the right to divorce and to sue for child support." if the homosexuals already have that, why cant they just be happy with that, they are receiving special privileges.  -  Tim, San Diego

Marriage is a bond shared between two persons no matter of what gender. The ruling of ending the ban on gay marriage is one step closer to true equality amongst all citizens. Though one may not like the idea everyone should have the same rights under the constitution without bias.  -  Adam, Chula Vista

Has everyone lost their sense of right and wrong? What's right now is to make sure we all vote out each one of these judges.  -  Ed, Lakeside

I feel that people should be able to live their lives the way they want to under the law. I don't believe in discriminating against anyone or anything. I wasn't raised that way. This is the United States of America. We are already divided in soo many ways as it is. Let's just stop the madness, and let people live their own lives.  -  Rebecca, El Cajon

Why do we bother to vote anymore? The conservative voice is silenced in this state. Liberal judges now appear to have to power to overturn the people's vote.  -  Sandy, Scripps Ranch

These are good people who, in most cases, have been together for many years. They have stayed in their relationships while facing adversity. Many "traditional" couples fail to do this. They should be congradulated, not condemned. There is nothing here that threatens the institution of marriage.  -  Christine, Valley Center

It's outrageous that the will of the people is being trashed by a few activist judges. All Californians have always had equal marriage rights; the right to marry someone of the opposite sex, not anyone they choose. Now this ruling opens the door to polygamous marriages or even worse.  -  Kerry, Escondido

Same sex marriage is un natural biologically. Opposite sex's were meant Not physicaqlly or biologically meant to exist. Marriage is for a man and a woman to enjoy in the attempt to create children PERIOD. How dare the government or ignorant spiritually dead people try to change medical and biological evidence, because of PRESSURE to try to change the Law of Nature and the ONLY God of Nature.  -  Peg, San Marcos

it doesn't matter whether your gay or straight love is love and if you love someone enough to marry them then you should be allowed to do so.  -  Jake, El Cajon

Why should gay men and lesbians be any different than our straight brothers and sisters. We vote, pay taxes, go to church, voluteer in our communities....love will always win over hate!!!  -  Jeff, San Diego

I guess when passing the proposition to keep marriage between a man and woman, passed by the majority of California voters, had been ignored. Nice to know our system of government is broken.  -  Morden, San Diego

What a sad day for our society! The will of the people has been overturned by the state supreme court. It feels like a socialistic society rather than a democratic society. Not once have we been told why the ruling is unconstitutional. A license in and of itself is discriminatory by nature because it requires applicants to qualify. A marriage license is issued to one man and one woman because they can procreate and therefore qualify for a marriage license. Therefore gay couples do not qualify for a marriage license.  -  Rick, Clairemont

I believe all human beings have a right to fall in love and not be judged or looked down upon because of skin color nor sexual preference. Afterall... aren't we all equal? As ar as I'm concerned... anything goes if it's LOVE! oxo  -  Linda, Santee

I am so confused as to why judges are given so much power to control the future of this country and it's practices. We vote, we tell the powers that be how we feel and what we stand for and we are consistently ignored. Why should the few control the many? Does that sound like democracy to you? When will the power be back in the hands of the people like our forefathers intended??  -  Heidi, Lemon Grove

The voters knocked it down once and will do it again this fall. The Court's decision will soon be irrelevant.  -  Brian, Solana Beach

The divorce rate is going to increase by 25%.  -  Jason, Hillcrest

The news today about our courts ruling in favor of the homosexuals is very depressing. It is a sad day when these mixed up people are forcing there perverted ways on the rest of society. It will only bring worse things to our state.  -  Carl, City Heights

if poeple say that they are gay prove it thier is no DNA footprint for gay it is a choice.  -  Arthur, Oceanside

We have voted no on this, signed voter petitions twice now protesting this and still the people making these decisions fail to listen! I am outraged! How is it that when we live in a democratic society and the majority voting is supposed to be how issues like this are decided and we have proven that the majority doesn't want same sex marriage, that a seven judge panel can make the decision against the majority vote? This is ridiculous! Does this mean I can marry my dog? How about my brother?  -  Star, Rancho Penasquitos

I am angry over the California Supreme Court decision to overturn the Gay Marriage Ban. Whether you look at it from a biblical or non-biblical perspective, it was never meant for two people of the same sex to be married. Same sex marriage is an oxymoron and should not ever be recognized as being equal with the marriage between a man and a woman.  -  Lee, Tierrasanta

I find it incredibly audacious for four members of the California Supreme Court to contradict millennia of social understanding that marriage is for and only for heterosexuals. Marriage is about procreation and families. And gay unions have not been endowed by their Creator to be able to procreate!  -  Stephen, San Diego

Tonight the words 'Equal justice under law' are not just etched on the U.S. Supreme Court building, they're a little bit closer to being a reality. But soon will come attacks by self rightous Americans who believe in freedom....unless it involves freedom for gay Americans.  -  John, North Park

It's a sad day when citizens both gay and straight, have their vote overturned by a liberal court. At the very least, divorce attorney's will have a field day when these people decide to split up.  -  Tony, Carlsbad

Once again, the California Supreme Court overrules the will of the people by trashing proposition 22, where over 62% of state voters cast their ballot to protect tradtional marriage. Our government officials are now acting more like dictators than servants of the People. Its time to wake up California and take action, before its too late!!!  -  Larry, Carlsbad

It's a sad day for California, and the world as this country continues to detiriorate after the marriage decision today, it's a slap in the face to God and God's creation. Judges will be judged at the end.  -  M, Chula Vista

this country is the land of the free, IS IN IT? so then why so many people mistreat and have anger towards gay people if is wrong we are nobody to judge if it is, God will i think people need to mind their business....now if they want to adopt children i think to a certain extend is good isnt it better to have a child with a loving family that growing in a orphanage? LEAVE THEM THE HECK ALONE THEY HAVE FEELINGS JUST LIKE YOU AND I. MIND YOUR OWN BUSSINES!!!!!!!!!!  -  Xena, El Cajon

I think this ruling shows just how morals mean nothing anymore. God created marriage, and He decided who could be married. Woe to the judges who voted to lift the ban. They are trying to turn California into Sodom and Gomorrah. I believe the ruling is so wrong!!!  -  Lois, Spring Valley

well as i do recall....being gay was considered to be a mental illness before 1974.now california wants gay marriage to be legal?and what about adoption?do they really want to let these childen with enough trouble in their lives into a topsy turvy world?i believe it is unconstitutional AND JUST PLAIN WRONG.what is happening to this world?EXTREME LIBERALS THATS WHAT!!!!!!  -  Christian, Chula Vista

It is a blessing to know that my 2 gay and successful sons will finaly have the same rights and protection, as their siblings, to share their lives with the spouse of their choice!  -  Sue, Rancho Bernardo

I find the ruling to be a disgrace to California, and a sin to God's Word. The real questions people really should be asking is... 1.If God really approved same sex marriages, then why would he create Women to be a help mate for Men. 2.Why can't Same Sex Couples Reproduce or Bear Children without the help of the other ? God made Adam and Eve. Not Adam and Steve or Eve and Amanda.  -  Vernon, Chula Vista

Even though I am gay, I still believe that marriage should be reserved for the union between man and woman. I believe gay couples should absolutely have the same benefits as heterosexual married couples, but that the actual definition of marriage remain that relationship between a man and a woman!  -  Ron, Oceanside

Marriage has always been very important to me as it is to my mother. The idea that I can get married now brings so much joy to my heart. My father thought differently as do a lot of straight people who like the idea of being with one person forever, but not willing to work on the relationship. I'm curious of how many of these people who want to keep marriage sacred between a man and a woman have been married more than once? Cheated on their spouse? Were pressured into the marriage by their families because they got their girlfriend pregnant before marriage? Were pressured into marriage, because their family suspected they were gay? If you want to use the bible for hate and oppression, I'm sure that God would be proud of you. Read the bible more closely and take a class on interpreting what it means today, you'd be surprised. For those of you that voted on the ban, think about your marriage and those close to you. Are you really upholding your vows and the commitment you've made? Do you have the right to judge someone else's right to happiness and acceptance?

Okay, people want to resort to the Bible in this discussion, let's really look at it.

It sounds pretty straightforward, doesn't it:  “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” (Leviticus 18:22)

“If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.” (Leviticus 20:13)

What is the problem?  The problem is that God's word says that anyone who relies on the law is under a curse.

“All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law." (Galatians 3:10)

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse for us,” (Galatians 3:13)

If you as a Christian measure yourself by how well you follow the Law, you have returned to your slavery to sin. Precisely what is meant by “a dog returning to its own vomit.”

And if you put other Christians under the Law, you are subjecting them to that very same yoke of slavery. You force them to return to their own vomit as well.

“But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.” (Galatians 5:18)

You cannot be led by the Spirit and follow the Law at the same time. It’s either one or the other. The Bible tells us to walk in the Spirit, to be filled with the Spirit, to keep in step with the Spirit. You can’t do these things if you are clinging to the Law.

And don't tell me, “Paul was talking about the ceremonial law, not the moral law. He abolished the ceremonial law, but we are still under the moral law.”

Sorry. That distinction between the ceremonial law and the moral law is a man-made excuse to keep themselves and others under bondage to the Law. Paul never makes any distinction between the so-called ceremonial law and the so-called moral law. The Bible does not make that distinction. The Law is the Law. And Paul says we are delivered from the Law.

So just remember this: anyone who uses the Law in Leviticus to prove that God condemns homosexuality is abusing Scripture—totally misusing Leviticus. You cannot use any verses from Leviticus (or Genesis) to determine what God’s will is.

You cannot quote Leviticus to prove God hates homosexuality.

Argue with Paul.

Fellow Christians, I challenge you to show me anywhere in the Bible this definition for marriage:  "Marriage is between one man and one woman."

Anywhere.  Absolutely anywhere will do.

I'm safe.  That so-called definition appears nowhere in the Bible.  Nowhere.

Is this a religious site? It is the Court's JOB to protect that rights of the FEW, not to please the many. THAT is our democracy.
