We asked your views on the proposed tax on sex related businesses.
I think those working at strip clubs should be higher. Having friends working in the industry, I know they make really good money but only claim about 1/3 of their earnings on their taxes since they get paid in all cash. - Kate, San Diego
I think it is a good idea to have this proposed sex tax. Although it may not contribute a significant amount of revenues overall in CA, it would still help bring in revenues (thus help with our state budget crisis), as this industry is a big business esp in the Los Angeles/San Fernando Valley area. Besides, we tax almost all vices (e.g., cigarettes, alcohol, etc), since we know these generate a lot of revenues, so why not adult entertainment? - Melita, La Jolla
One question I have is how does the adult sex industry in this state cost more than firefighters and police. What kind of "service" are they providing that would justify a tax. My personal opinion is that this is just another attempt to drive business away from California which will only hurt the state even more. These people are required to pay income taxes like everyone else, isn't that enough? - Mike, Penesquitos
If the plan is to tax the porn, strip, sex industry out of California, then I'm on board. I have zero sympathy for an industry that promotes perversion, nurtures a drug filled environment and exploits people for money. Let the message resonate loud and clear, you and your industry are not welcome here. If you don't like it, go find a nice hole to crawl into in another state. We'll be happy to show you the door. - Bill, San Diego
I think we should tax everyone who works at McDonalds because they are contributing to obesity which ends up costing the government a lot of money in health care costs. Come on now!! - Ellen, Chula Vista
I do disagree on this matter cause there are several that are doing it for extra cash for their family life to be better. Lot of them are single moms and it's just another income for them. - Wendy, La Mesa
In a time when teacher's jobs are being cut out from the public education system, I find it appalling that adult entertainers are complaining about paying their fair share. It is one of the industries everyone knows is "under the table" cash. Adult Entertainment is a service-based industry and should be taxed appropriately. - Gary, Normal Heights
I work at a downtown night club and my wife and I sometimes visit local strip clubs. In my experience, there are far, far, fewer incidents requiring police presence at the strip clubs than at any Gaslamp night club. This Assemblyman's morality tax makes me ashamed to be a Democrat. - Kevin, San Diego
Because the government has a spending problem it can't control does not give them the right to be Robin Hood! - Brent, Pacific Beach
Where would we be without California assemblymen that are out of touch with their constituents? Too bad these people get so much attention just for promoting bad laws. - Tim
I really don't think that they require more policing; I think that most people involved in this industry police themselves. They don't want more than usual attention given to their industry. Taxing then will only drive them underground or out of the state and we will lose the taxes that we are already getting from them and the taxes from the consumers that use their services. - Mike, Tijuana
Tax them!!! San Diego will go on without the sex industry. This is an industry that America's Finest does not need. - Denise
Why doesn't Calderon propose a similar tax on undocumented workers to help cover the cost of their health care and related expenses. Doesn't this make at least as much if not more sense than taxing porn workers for their related expenses? - J., San Diego
Just because people are poorly behaved in Los Angeles - which has a very high crime rate, anyway - why punish the rest of the state? Why should we have to pay for LA's mismanagement of law enforcement. If their county wants its residents to vote on the tax, that's fine, but it has nothing to do with San Diego or the rest of California. I am absolutely appalled that they would tax workers an additional 25% who are already paid much lower than most people probably assume. - Jennifer, El Cajon
Ask Calderon if he would go after illegal aliens as much as legal tax payers. - David, Vista
Increasing or adding a tax will only make things worst for struggling entertainers. Why not tax: taxi-drivers, night clubs, churches regarding religion. Any business involving entertainment. Yes, this is someone's personal view ONLY! - Rick, San Diego
I work as a Commercial Leasing Agent and get taxed 41% on my commission I bring in, in part, because the commission can be so high. In part, strippers tips are a lot like receiving a large commission and would only be fair they be taxed as well, otherwise, I'm in the wrong business. - Erik, San Diego
I'm not in the Adult entertainment industry but a tax of 25% seems outrageous! I wouldn't want to pay that high of a percentage even at my job. - Angela
