We asked what you thought about the 14-year-old girl who is being charged as an adult in the murder of her mother.
It's a sad thing, but if perhaps more "kids" were charged as adults and held responsible for thier actions, we'd have fewer problems. The fact is that unless we start treating these "Kids" as adults when the commit adult crimes, there will be no slowing in gang crime. As a society we need to step up, and step away from the touchy-feely way we've been dealing with crime, and actually make the punishments for crimes a deterent. there will be no end to crime, be it theft or murder initiations for gangs. Until a few 14 year old gang bangers are exectued for the inumerous crimes ! they've committed. there is no real reason for new recruits not to join a gang. because thre is not real punishment for them even if they are caught. - Damon, Escondido
This young lady is a dangerous person. I think this is a sad situation that is every parents nightmare. Unfortunately, Rebecca's nightmare is over, and Heather shows no remorse in the video footage of her shown on TV. My heart goes out to her father and sisters, and God Speed to Rebecca... This young lady must have some serious issues that assure she does not belong in the public. I support the idea of Heather being charged as an adult. - Kim, Ramona
yeah she should be tried as an adult she knew exactly what she was doing, and how to do it, if she made an adult crime than she can face adult charges. - Shelly, Oceanside
I find it appauling that such a young child would commit such a heinous act. I think the court should make an example out her especially in the face of the budget shortfall that is demanding serious cuts of teachers. - Gary, Normal Heights
I would like to know what was the reasoning found behind the murder was? Have they interviewed Heather on her reasoning of hurting and then killing her mother? I believe many things could have contributed to this act although murder is never an answer, it seems as if there was something else that created this situation. Before we can judge if she should be trialed as an adult or a child I feel that this should be further researched and the media should also remember this as well. - Hilary, San Diego
This is such a horrific crime. I think that at age 14 you know right from wrong. I agree that she needs to be tried as an adult, although my heart breaks for the family. I can't imagine the pain they feel. Talk about a torn heart. - Lisa, Poway
Having a staff member who knows the family personally, they stated it was very apparent to all around the teenager that she had some emotional / psychological problems. I'm not sure the correct title for it but a normal person knows there are psychological issues when a child is known to cut themselves for the joy of blood and to "feel" the pain. With this knowledge, It's truly sad to see the City Prosecutor seeking to try the teenager as an adult verses assisting the girl with getting psychological help. Murder by anyone is wrong but to try a trouble teen as an adult with the outcome of life in prison is not going to help the 14 year old but will only cause more emotional problems. The situation over all quite sad and my prayers are with the family. - Shawn, El Cajon
I think that she should be given a serious psychiatric evaluation before determining whether to try her as an adult. I can't see many sound minded 14 yr olds bludgenoning their moms to death with a hammer. If she is found to be clinically stable, by all means should she be tried as an adult. - Jen, El Cajon
A 14 year old does not have the mental capacity of an adult. Remember how you thought you knew it all at 16. Now as an adult you realize just how little you know. In a few years she will grow up and realize what she has done, and she will be harder on herself then any prison sentence. - Diana, Spring Valley
My general views are you do the crime, you do the time, but in this case....I do not beleive that being punished by the age of 25 by law (as a juvenile) is enough time. Therefore, I am for trying her as an adult...granted no one really knows what happened to lead up to the crime, but to kill is UNFORGIVABLE!!!!! - Kristine, Del Cerro
The nonchalant demeanor displayed in the back of the patrol car help project that the decision to try as an adult is fitting-not to mention the severity of the crime. - Tomi, Carlsbad
Cold blooded murder is murder! let justice be served so that these kids of today wont think that its cool to kill there parents! - Kuippo, South East San Diego
I think that it was wrong what she did..She should be punished and also let her suffer what she did to her only and always mother that brought her to this world. Veronica, San Ysidro
I think she should not be tried as an adult because teenagers often get carried away with anger and if she did kill her mom, she might have not realized it. She should still receive counseling no matter the outcome. - Daniel, Clairemont
Mrs.D'Aouse was my 5th grade councilor and she was so nice to everybody there was no reason why her daughter should have done that. I agree with the idea that she is tried as an adult. Mrs.D'Aouse was the best teacher and i was really sad of what happened. I was really shocked. Her daughter had no idea what she was doing her mother was a very nice person and her daughter did a very bad thing. I would be so happy if there was some way to save her in the hospital buts its too late. Now her daughter screwed her whole life! Im saying again rs. D'Aouse was very nice and helped the school so much and gave us a lot of things. Me and friends were really shocked and really sad!!! - Sam, San Diego UTC
There is no question that the 14 year old knew what she was doing. It is ultimately the saddest crime, a child killing a parent. But, the young woman must take the responsibility for her crime. Not only must she live with the ultimate guilt, she will have to live with the punishment. She made an adult decision and must live with the consequences. There are no winners here, only sadness. - Michele, Chula Vista
I am a single Father of a 14 yr, old daughter and I remember saying to Adriana that morning when the news broke about the story, "What could have happened at 8:30 in the morning to have a daughter and mother to have such a fight that would end up in tragedy and death. I can't imagine having to try my daughter as an adult for murder in the first degree, I can't even imagine! - Brian, Rancho Bernardo
I feel that children should not be tried as adults. Does society feel that a 14 year old has the understanding to vote, than why treat them like adults only in the court system? - Elizabeth, South Park
She commited an adult crime without the influence of any drugs or alcohol, so she should be punished as an adult. - Nadia, Chula Vista
When I hear of a case that involves a child killing a parent, most often it was a child who had been adopted. I wonder if there are statistics on this that support my claim? I know that children of adoption do have more psychological barriers to overcome. Also parents may not know the full family history on their adopted child so many diseases go under the radar and escape early preventive treatment. - Jason, San Diego
Most likely the only hammer this girl ever used was in a video game. Can she really be judged as an adult having such a short experience at life? - Riki, Imperial Beach
I think we should re-examine what age we should be considered adults. Time has changed the world is spinning faster. Kids are maturing quicker now-a-days. And are more aware of what is wrong or right at a younger agee. So by setting a set age on adulthood. There would be no need to ask "if a child should be tried as an adult". - April, Imperial Beach
This girl shows absolutely no remorse, only attitude. There is clearly somthing seriously wrong with her. It's as if she has no soul. Someone like that will not get what they need in juvenile hall. Tried as an adult is what she needs. - CJ, Mission Valley
Well personally I stick with you did the crime you do the time. But at the same time noone in the world is that cruel. Something really had to be wrong with this child. You don't kno what was going through her head. Im pretty sure she didn't do this for nothing. Dont get me wrong nothing is justifiable for taking a life. But she is still a child and should be tried as one. If you feel as if she should be tried as an adult, she should be named as an adult at 14. And last time i checked you are not legal til 18. So fix the legal system and stop going on a case by case basis. - Shabrea
