  • Charger's Fan Rules

We asked you about the Chargers' new rules for fans.

No cursing at an NFL game??? Since when have NFL games become a day care center?! This is NOT the circus! The First Amendment allows me to say whatever the _____ I please!  -  Brian, Solana Beach

I think that it is great they are starting to crack down on some things. The text messaging will be great because security can't see everything that's happening. It helps to keep the games a little safer. You have kids around at these games seeing this and it teaches them that fighting is okay. This is what happens when you have alcohol involved; people act stupid. The random DUI checks is a great thing too! It reduces dangerous people on the roads!  -  Sherry, San Diego

I agree going to charger games should be an experience based on sports and not a place for thugs to make it uncomfortable for true football fans.  -  Rey, Oceanside

I think it's about time it happened. It's really sad that you pay all that money for a ticket only to wind up being surrounded by drunken, obnoxious people. You can't just sit and enjoy the game. I would never take a young child to see a game in person, who knows what could happen. What they really need to do is prohibit people from entering the stadium who are visibly intoxicated before gametime. There's plenty of them in the parking lot before every home game.  -  Jay, East County

  • Sales Tax Hike

We asked you about the governor's proposal of adding a penny to the state's sales tax.

Time for a new governor.  -  Donald, Normal Heights

I have no problem paying taxes, even having them increased, as long as the money is used efficiently and wisely. I do wish our government's spending practices were more transparent to the every day person. If you can't afford to go shopping because of the 1% increase, you probably shouldn't be shopping in the first place. We are a country of excess and now we're paying for it.  -  Nicole, Golden Hills

I would pay a two cent tax hike if we could get Arnold out of office.  -  Ed, Escondido

According to the report aired, the governor wants to MANDATE a sales tax increaes of 1%, but ASK state agencies to reduce spending. Tax payers always have to pay for mis-management of funds. If we are going to have a mandatory tax increase, then we should also have mandatory spending cuts, not just request cuts. Since we earn our pay, they should earn our taxes.  -  Leonard, Spring Valley

I think he should raise the tax. We already going through an economic crisis.  We don't need another one on our shoulders.  -  Denisse, San Diego

A temporary increase in the sales tax? Don't fall for it. Not only will the tax be permanent, the tax will fall short of the endless spending programs concocted by the buffoons in our state legislature. Slash and burn the size of this government. Stop stealing from the hard-working taxpayers who don't want the bloated vision of Sacramento.  -  Mark, Rancho Penasquitos

I believe that the governor shouldn't rise the taxes. I believe he should get the money from an alternative source, such as from casinos. Let make the rich casinos & oil companies pay for Californians.  -  Jazhiel, Chula Vista

i heard that there is going to be a sale increase why doesnt the state lower gas prices and taxes on home because we have alot of crisis going around the state thanks.  -  Cruz, Oceanside

No sales tax increase, no matter what. Governments never have enough money to spend, in their opinion. A detailed disclosure of how much is spent on different budget items would greatly anger the overwhelming majority of citizens. When governments "cut spending", they purposely try to cause as much pain as possible, to keep citizens from asking for spending cuts again.  Ed, Scipps Ranch

I wonder what the cities, counties and state have done with their sales tax windfall from the sale of gasoline? If the price per gallon went from $2 awhile back to $4,then didn't the sales tax revenues from this double? Why doesn't ask about this?  -  Bill, El Cajon

  • Sycuan Liquor License

We asked your views about the fight over a liquor license at the Sycuan casino.

why does Sycuan have to ask for a liquor license ? their reservation is thier own country, since we robbed, raped, and stole all they had. they shouldnt have to even ask for a license, they should be allowed to do whatever they want in thier OWN COUNTRY !  -  Jason, East County

How about installing guard rails (at Sycuan's expense) along Dehesa Rd where the biggest risk of accidents exists?  -  S. Brod, Carlsbad

Ultimately it's the consumers decision on whether to drink and drive. The Casino shouldn't have to lose money because of someones stupidity. Thats why casinos have hotels on site. If the casino takes all the necessary precautions, why deny them something they are allowed to have?  -  Delanie, El Cajon

its about time that an alcohol license was denied at a casino. if alcohol is served at Sycuan and the people who drank have to drive home it will cause more problems on our road. its always better safe than sorry.  -  Michelle, San Diego

I think they should approve the license for liquor. If all the other casino here have one why should sycuan only be the one to not have one? All the other casinos are around residental area also. Well if they don't let sycuan have a license, I don't think all the other once should have a license eather. Barona has a curvy 2 lane road and they serve liquor. I don't see why not I like that casino is one of the best.  -  Jacqueline, Chula Vista

  • State Budget Cuts

The governor slashed wages for state employees today and we asked for your reactions.

I think the Governer, needs to stop making buget cuts, because thats what is causing this already bad economy to get even worse!  -  Nicole, El Cajon

The man should take the wages away from himself and the rest of the people who are really responsable for the budget maylay. See if they can live on that amount for a while. Why should they get their regular money.  -  Connie, Vista

This is so typical of politicians. They can't pass a budget so they hurt the little guy. I don't see any of our legislators cutting their pay and benefits.  -  Brian, Fallbrook

Why does the govenor have to do alot of cuts? Right now we have enough problems with foreclosures, economy, and budget cuts. 1st arnold cuts funding for schools and now salary cuts without jobs people are losing their homes, credit and without jobs or not making enough money residents are having hard times putting food on the table with high prices.  -  Cruz, Oceanside

I believe today's actions were unfair and not well thought out. It's enough that our economy is down and gas prices are on the increase now we face the additional stress of loss jobs and trying to make ends meet. My thoughts go out to those who have lost their jobs.  -  L. Williams

I think its hidious that the Governor would cut the wages of state workers to the federal minimum wage and lay off over 22,000 interim workers. Instead he should have cut the legislatures pay or made them go without pay until they could finally get off their butts and approve the state budget. The people who are working for the state should not bear the brunt of the legislatures inability to approve a state budget.  -  LeighAnne, Carlsbad

I think the govenor should cut the politians wages and notthe state employees. The politians would surely pass the budget a lot fastr if they were making minimum eage!!!  -  Teri, Carlsbad

The governor should withhold the saleries of law makers & anyone else responsible for coming up with the budget, until they do the job their paid for. Leave the state employees alone. They shouldn't be the scapegoat.  -  Walt, San Marcos

I don't know how anyone in San Diego, or all of California for that matter, could survive on minimum wage. I bring home double plus that of minimum wage and still struggle. I understand that we have a state budget but so many will suffer from this and it surely will NOT help our economy.  -  Christine, Pacific Beach

It seems like the same people who are moaning and groaning over losing their jobs or taking a pay cut are the same people who want to protest higher taxes. The state is obviously in a fiscal crisis, so something has to be done. You don't want your taxes raised so now you see what the alternative is. So be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.  -  Greg, Otay Ranch

Although I am a young teen, and I am not too keen on this subject, I feel that our governor's action is detrimental to our society. He may be thinking about our economy, though he has not taken into consideration of how his signature on that very important paper will determine people's futures. Especially with these high gas prices and scarcity of work, how will they get by on $6.55? I hope this is over soon. Thanks for taking the time to read this.  -  Chrissy, Escondido

I'm getting tired of hearing how we need to cut money from so many places and we still can't balance the budget. First education takes a huge blow and now state workers are out of of a job? What a joke...why doesn't the governor take a pay cut to help balance the budget?  -  Karla, San Diego

He may have 25-30inch biceps, but he sure is really weak! Why don't he start cutting from the TOP instead of the bottom!!! I'm sure state employees who make 90k to 400k a year could afford a little pay cut more than the ones who make 24k-40k!  -  Vince, Pacific Beach

I bet if the State Legislatures pay got cut to $6.55 an hour they would pass a budget.  -  Rob, Ramona

The Governor has no right to take our money away. Some of us can barely pay our bills, and with him making us have min. wage, is a disaster. The real reason though isn't just because he wants to pay bills, is it for his cause. If anyone has put any research into this, they would have found out what a racist governor we have. First came the bill saying that all students would be taught at the best level they could, and would send moeny to help. Yet i ask, where was that money? That money was being used to try and establish more security at the border, or and now this, he claims he! doesn't want to have any illegals in this country, yet he came in illegal. That money will be used to establish some of his actions. The governor is using our moeny and raising taxes for his advatnage. Like Bush, i ask the same question, when will we get rid of him.  -  Steve, City Heights

I have many friends that work for the state of california and this is just a slap in the face from an experienced actor playing governor and not having a clue of finance. Now we will see if he is re-elected. He should stick to what he knows which is bad acting and not running a state government. All those that voted for him should see by now that they made a bad decision. Including his faithful movie fans.  -  Keith, El Cajon

Well if the governor wanted to cut pay he should have started with the state legislators.... let them know how it feels to scrap by on $6.55 an hour.  -  Joe, Imperial Beach

I think that the Gov & all of CA legislators should be highly ashamed. They knew of the impending deadline, procastronated, paid attention to their own interests & left the people who pay their salaries high & dry. I think their salaries should have been the first to be cut and they should be permanently laid off. We can donate their salaries to the state budget! Can we vote them out? Congress should also be disbanded. We can rule ourselves and do a better job!  -  Carrie, La Mesa

I think the legislatures should cut all the stupid programs before salaries. Also maybe they should cut their own pay first.  -  Dan, Imperial Beach

  • State Wage Cuts

We asked your views on the Governor's plan to cut state wages.

Tell Arnold to cut the $15 billon we spend on illegal immigrants and you don't have to cut the pay for American citizens. -  James, Banker's Hill

Wouldn't it save much more if the wages of the governor and the state legislatures were cut rather than those that actually do all the work? Their one paycheck is equal to 5-10 state workers yearly income.  -  Michele, Del Cerro

Why isn't the Governator threatening to cut the salaries for members of the legislature that actually have a vote in the buget matter. Why doesn't he take a HUGE pay cut to help the budget?  -  Drea, Del Cerro

if the state really wants to save money and balance the budget..why not cut some salaries of senators and congressmen/women and do not cut wages of ANYONE making $12.00 or less....per hour...gas paid for cars of the "public servants" would probably save way more than cutting the pay of people that don't make that much anyway.  -  Nancy, Chula Vista

Gov. Swarzenegger's plan to cut the pay of public employees is part of a partisan game that uses public employees and their families as bargaining chips. Such action is disrespectful and plays to the partisan bullying that goes on in Sacramento. I hope the legislators who have the public's true well-being in mind are able to hold the line, not allow these people and their families to be put through strife, and pass a budget soon.  -  A., San Diego

I don't support the governors proposal. It is an effort maintain services on the backs of public employees. It's wrong. The republican state legislative leadership needs to act and stop blocking progress with the state budget. Real solutions involve forwarding merit worthy ideas and not taking a 'no' stance on all democratic lead proposals. It takes a team effort to solve the states budget problem.  -  Brandon, Banker's Hill

How does the Govenor really expect people to survive this tough economy on a little over $6/hr. People have mortgages, rent, food, and gas to purchase. All which are not cheap. People will not be able to afford the gas to get to work and might not have a home to go home to after work if their home goes into foreclosure. SDGE, AT&T, the water Co, all do not want to hear "sorry can't pay due to the state budget not being passed". The harder he makes it for people to survive, the longer it will take for this economy to recover!  -  Renee, San Diego

I feel that it's a mistake to take away jobs, and reduce pay for state workers just because elected officials can't do their job's properly. Why don't we take away their pay, they caused the problem. Well. I guess it's what we get for putting a not so great actor in office.  -  Lois, Spring Valley

I do not believe that the cut is fair, even if it saves a billion dollars a month. The cut is out of the question. It is hard enough to live with the salary most government employees recieve currently.  -  Sayed, Spring Valley

It's ridiculous that our legislators cannot pass a budget on time. They know exactly when it is due and how long it takes. If they were in the business world and continuously missed deadlines like this, they would be fired immediately. It's especially bad since they are not the ones that suffer for their inability to do their job. Maybe we should hold them accountable and vote them all out of office.  -  Steve, Scripps Ranch

I fully support the Governor's hard stance on the budget. Drastic times call for drastic measures. Although unfortunate some deep salary cuts in state government agencies will be made it is better than everyone suffering with higher taxes.  -  Stan, Normal Heights

  • Officer Pleads Not Guilty in Shooting

We asked you about the off-duty officer who shot at a woman and her 8-year-old son.

I am relieved charges have been filed against the officer involved. I feel that is appropriate and the next stage is an open, fair trial.  -  Lee, Pacific Beach

Am I the only one confused? An Off duty Coronado Police Office Shoots Ex- San Diego Charger Foley and gets NOTHING???? He even still has his job! If this isn't a double standard. What is????  -  Nicholas, Mission Hills

I am amazed that Dumanis would finally do the right thing. I appreciate and respect police officers. But even they make mistakes and should always be held accountable for their actions. I believe both parties made huge errors in judgement and both need pay the price.  -  Ken, Oceanside

I definitely think the officer involved in the shooing in Oceanside should face charges as well. He was off duty and total wrong to draw a weapon and then fire it into a car with a woman and her young child. Why should he be above the law? Yes he should be prosecuted as well.  -  Cynthia, Vista

This female drug addled maniac attempted to commit bodily harm to an officer, whether he was off duty or not! I believe that he had every right to protect himself and deploy his weapon!  -  Dan and Cindy, Santee

I am in support of the DA. This is the kind of accountability we need to have to ensure our police officers are not using excessive force. Although the victim may have committed road rage I don't think anything other than endangering the officer's well being deserves being shot at, as well as her innocent passenger.  -  Scott, Normal Heights

I am happy with the decision although I am very surprised. It seems in the past that the SDPD has had a blank check on shooting whoever they want. I think this is overdue. We need to put a stop to this indiscriminate shooting. Just as the public has to obey the law, so do police.  -  Nancy, San Diego

I don't know who to be more afraid of anymore, the cops, or the robbers, I guess now with this shooting of a 8 year old boy, I am more afraid of the police, I have three children and I don't know what to tell them, I am truly worried that we are slowing converting into a Third world country, Whats next ? Police beating down civilians ?? Oops , oh yeah that's already happened too.  -  Brandon, San Diego

I have felt from the start this officer should be prosecuted. If not, then NO one should be prosecuted for ROAD RAGE again. That is all it was plain and simple. A normal citizen would have been arrested right away. This man had NO right to fire into that car.  -  C. Dunaway, Fallbrook

Good! I'm glad he's being charged. Road rage or not, he has no right to pull out a gun and use self-defense as an excuse! How many of us experience road rage and pull no guns at all?? Because he had a badge he felt like abusing that power--putting other drivers at risk. What's more, that she had drugs in her possession is AFTER the fact. Is that how police intend to put law-breakers in jail by shooting at them and their children before they find out citizens are breaking it?? I'm glad charges against the officer will NOT set a precedent for! other power-abusing police officers. I hope Ms. Silva and her son get justice!  -  Norma, Normal Heights

The officer involved should be prosecuted. What gives him the right to pull his weapon and fire especialy w/o even identifying himself as a police officer.Besides, who is crazy enough to shoot someone over a car accident.Seems like the police feel like they can get away with murder.I also feel poor training and psych evaluations has played a very big part in this as well.  -  Jeff, North County

  • Water Conservation

We asked your view of the latest water emergency in San Diego.

I was in the 1980 heat wave in Oklahoma. They had manditory water rationing, odd number houses could water on certain days & even mumbers on another. Watering times were 9pm to 6am. Currently I only water my front at night (at 9 minutes a day)and soon to be every other day. How come all city parks, offices, and housing water during the hottest times of day?  -  Rod, Mira Mesa

One solution would be to create a "we tip" type of phone service that anyone can call to report businesses, apartment and condo complexes, business parks and local governments such as Cal Trans that are wasting water by: 1. Having broken pipes they haven't fixed 2. have sprinklers that are watering sidewalks, streets and parking lots and need adjusting. We need one number to call that the staff can then track down who is responsible. They waste far more money than I do flushing the toilet.  -  Carylnne, Flinn Springs

Action does need to be taken to conserve water, not only in our homes but also in the community. I feel places of business could cut back--knowing many residents spend just as much time at work as at home. What about cutting back on watering the sides of the highway, in the middle of the day--the worst time to water! Aren't the majority of the roadside plants ice plant, a draught tolerant plant?   -  Julie, La Mesa

I was just wondering, as a regular viewer of Channel 6, I couldn't help and notice that the logos have been taken out of the news set. Are you guys going to get a new set? or are they going to replace it with a new set of San Diego 6 logos?  -  Marco, Chula Vista

Another rate hike? Why doesn't the mayor get all the "Homeowners Associations" to stop requiring all their properties to have green lawns 100% of the time. Homeowners pay a fine if their lawn dies & now you want to hike up everyone? More than 50% are using twice the amount just to keep their assoc. off their backs. What about replacing the roadside greenery with rocks or gravel why continue to water???  -  Laura, Santee

I think the city's should look a there self. I see water wasted by leaking into the street behind the Albertsons in Lemon Grove. Several times thru the year as now the sprinklers are leaking gal's of water in the street, also the sprinklers on the 125 mostly go onto the freeway. Someone should monitor them.  -  W., Spring Valley

The water emergency is not obvious enough for the average resident. If it is as serious as it sounds, the City needs to work with the media to educate San Diegans about the issue, what can be done, how much of a reduction is required, and the implications if we are not successful. The city and the media need to get serious on the issue.  -  Kevin, Stonecrest

Amazing. At this late date in intellectual history, San Diego isn't convinced that the law of supply and demand applies to water. Political rationing is better for politicians, of course, but price rationing is better for everyone else--so expect political rationing.  -  Roberto, San Diego

I find it quite ironic that your broadcast would show a story about the dire need to conserve water and yet show multiple shots of running water such as a hose or a shower. Why would you feel the need to waste water to prove the point in your broadcast? I'm baffled!  -  Sacha, Lakeside

i don't think it's fair to implement any kind of rate hikes to compensate for other peoples stupidity i rent and pay the water and i already pay alot i don't water my tard or anything but yet people like me are being penalized for others carelessness it is a serious issue but there has to be another solution.  -  Kelly, City Heights

What is Mayor Sanders doing to stop water waste in the government secoor? I'll start conserving water when a zero development policy is in effect.  -  Steve, San Diego

As usual the city wants to punish the public for their shortcomings. They pulled this in the 70s and ended up with a surplus and raised our rates anyway. I refuse to reduce my water usage since the city won't stop issuing building permits. Look at the condo conversions in PB. What used to be one house on a lot is now 8-10 units. How much more water is being used per square foot? The city needs to get serious about the problem, not their revenue. Allow the de-salination sites. There's a bolus of water sitting right outside our backyard.  -  Don, Pacific Beach

I believe thats unbelievable where is the money we are paying for water going? I don't think is a good idea it will hurt a lot of people. There is plenty of water we live right by the ocean. Why should the city tell us how manage our water? They don't pay we all do.  -  Jacqueline, Chula Vista

If we use more water, they raise rates. If we use less water, they raise rates. Either way, they're continuing to issue building permits, consuming what the rest of us conserve.  -  Eugene, Chula Vista

What the city needs is a dedicated group of people to be the task force. Start with all companys, restaurants etc. .. I cannot tell you how many times I have used a "public" resroom only to discover the low flush toilet is running or continually flushing. .wasting too many gallons to fathom. Same goes for the faucets. Many times they are running. . .The task force should educate and fine for this kind of waste. And don't forget about the sprinklers along freeways many times they are going when not needed. We need to target businesses here -not just residents. San Diegans can barely aff! ord to live day to day. Thank you for your time. Theresa SD native and soon to be tree hugger.  -  Theresa, San Diego

What measures are the City of San diego taking during this water crisis were in. What about all the water that's wasted on keeping all these golf courses green or the watering of plants on the side of the highway during the middle of the day!!! I have no problem conserving water but don't ask the general public for one thing and them do another.  -  Elizabeth, Rancho Bernardo

I used to believe Mike Aquirre until I just saw him saying our water supply should be dictated by the City Counsel! The same people who bankrupt our city! They're clearly not qualified. Regardless, we've all seen this before 6 years ago during the "energy crisis". We all conserved energy like we were told to do and SDG&E raised the rates because their revenue went down. Water rates are going up either way. May as well use what you pay for.  -  Vince, Mira Mesa

Though the housing development brings revenue, it apparently does not bring increased water supply as well. Gee, more homes sharing a non-increasing supply means less water per household. Am I missing something here?  -  J., Clairemont

  • Plastic Bag Ban

We asked for your views on the proposed ban of plastic shopping bags.

Could we please focus on the more important issue, to wit, our neighbor to the south, which pours its sewage and trash into the ocean?!?!  -  Brian, Solana Beach

I think the city should begin accepting plastic bags in the municipal recycling program. I can bring them for recycling to my local grocery store, but I can't put them in my blue bin. Yet I can recycle all sorts of other plastics. Seems like a missing piece.  -  Jenny, Pacific Beach

Recycling is better than banning the bags. The solution is to make Waste Management take them as plastic recyclables. This is what happens in Orange County, but not here.  -  William, Carlsbad

Hooray!! More of the nanny state coming to a city near you!!.  -  Andrew, Imperial Beach

I think it's a great idea and should be supported. In Europe everyone brings in their own cotton bags to grocery stores to support the environment...so should we.  -  Julian, Vista

I find it absolutely ridiculous that they would tax for small things such as plastic bags. All the tax would do is bring more revenue at the expense of shoppers. I wouldn't be surprised if they were to tax us on items with plastic containers, things like Dish Soap.  -  D., Oceanside

If the stores are going to start charging a fee for plastic or paper bags does this mean that there is going to be a CRV on plastic bags just like there is for plastic bottles? Just because a fee is charged doesn't mean that it is going to make a difference. Look at the statistics involved with plastic bottles and aluminum cans going to landfills. If the people of San Diego don't care about that, what makes anyone think that a fee for plastic bags will make a difference? It is a choice that everyone needs to make to help the environment. A fee for plastic bag! s won't change people's minds unless the people want their minds changed.  -  Anonymous, Normal Heights

I re-use every plastic bag that I bring my groceries home in. A ban would cause an increase in my budget because I would then have to purchase bags for the uses I put the grocery bags to. I don't think it would cause less waste at the landfill because people that re-use them will do as I would do, buy bags to replace them.  -  Kim, Encinitas

i think they sould not take alway plastic bags from the stores because they are very helpful for carryn grocery.  -  Carlos, Chula Vista

i think if you eleminate the plastic bag it will save people money and not only that less trash in our state. i think if everyone switch to material bags we can save money help the economy and not only help our planet out. i think also children have less trash of accidently killing themselfs by putting a plastic bag over there head when mommy steps away and less accidentle deaths.  -  Larry, El Cajon

While I understand the necessity and our duty to recycle and protect our environment for the future, I believe this proposal is too drastic. People should be able to have a choice and too many of our choices are being taken away. And the idea of being charged is over the top. Gas prices rising out of control, being charged for bags on airline flights and now this. If we live out of scarcity, it will continue to be perpetuated.  -  Nancy, University City

Year ago enviornmentalists complained about paper bag usage at grocery stores and they favored the use of plastic bags. Now that plastic bags have been used, these same groups want a ban on plastic bags favoring shoppers supplying their own cloth type bags. In a few years these same groups will complain that cotton in short supply and they will demand another change. These enviornemntalist will never be happy and they need to get a job instead of complaining about everything.   -  Tim, North County

If plastic bags are eliminated, I will just be forced to BUY commercial plastic bags to dispose of kitchen waste and trash. I'm always grateful that I can put those plastic grocery bags to a good use and save money, too.  -  Kat, San Diego

I think that doing anything to reduce waste is great. However I believe that more bags are recycled than they say. I reuse all my bags in the little trashcans in the house. What I don't use I take to my child's school for them to reuse as trash bags. If more companies (like fast food restaurants) package food in 100% recycled and recyclable materials and advertise this more, this would get more people to recycle and would be a greater impact on the environment as well as the economy. There is a lot more items recyclable than just bottles cans and paper. Almost every thing we buy ! that comes in a package, that package is recyclable   -  Adam, La Mesa

The plan to eliminate plastic bags, and even paper bags is ludicrous! What will the environmentalists think of next...to ban toilet paper. C'mon people, enough is enough!  -  Natalie

Ireland has the right idea. We use too many plastic bags unnecessary. It is easy to take reusable bags. I have been using them since 1992. Cashiers and consumers need to be more conscious of their bag consumption. It is not necessary to have a plastic bag for one item. If you can carry it to the cashier in your hand, why can't you carry it to your car and house without a bag? We just need to change our habits, there is too much bag pollution, I will be glad to see them go. My slogan is "Just say NO to plastic bags"  -  Carole, La Mesa

  • La Raza Conference

We asked you views on the upcoming La Raza conference.

All one needs to do is read their organization documents to conclude that they are an unamerican group."  -  James, San Diego

I think that La Raza may be somewhat of a separatist group and that the candidates should not justify their existence. Latinos who are here legally should have the same concerns as anyone else here legally. To say that La Raza represents Latino concerns is to acknowledge that that their concerns may conflict with the rest of America's concerns.  -  Chris, San Diego

This is horrible that council members would do this, they obviously do not read what they endorse. "The Race" organization should be condemned not honored. This is a very sad day for San Diego.  -  Guy, Bonsall

Though La Raza is an organization that could be considered ethnocentric, it is only natural that such an organization would represent latinos since they are an underrepresented part in national politics. If Caucasians were underrepresented they would do the same.  -  Ricardo, San Diego

It is easier to engage in name-calling and embrace the views of deceitful radio talk-show hosts than to think. Senators Obama and McCain are doing the right thing by addressing the National Council of La Raza. People who object to the existence of groups like the NCLR do not understand U.S history and the experience of Latinos and other minorities in this country, or they just don't care.  -  Enrique, Encinitas

la raza is similar to the kkk, but with many lawyers and a brown skin agenda. it is all about the promotion of hispanic/mexican/chicano peoples to the exclusion of others. the idea of a "brown race" only organization receiving acknowledgement, by our presidential candidates, is pandering at it's lowest level. next thing you know, it will be a "skinhead raza" convention, in the san diego convention center, expecting recognition by our elected officials. time will tell. God help us through this stupidity.  -  David, Chula Vista

La Raza menas the Race, and it's not American. It's all about the Mexican race and wanting to take the southwestern United States and make it their own Country, not even wanting to be a part of Mexico. they are a terrorist organization with the Brown Berets as their troops and the American Friends of the Border as their political wing. We need to stop them NOW.  -  Douglas, National City

We know the agenda for the illegal aliens and the La Raza crowd are to try and take away California and several other states, it's not going to be that difficult for them when our own government is holding the door open for them to do so. I have lost respect for the governor and also the mayor of San Diego. They are kissing some major A** to get the latino vote, as well as the presidential nominees. Very disappointing to watch what was once a great state go into to a state of disrepair and poverty.  -  Lisa

Of course they are a racist group. They state it by the name they choose. They are not "for" white people. The only people not banded together by race to expand or protect their political position are white people. Understand that the very wealthy rulers of this country do not represent, or reflect the interests of, white people as a group. They represent the interests of their economic class, the rich, regardless of race.  -  Ed

  • Foley Settlement

We asked you about the $5.5 million settlement paid to former Charger Steve Foley.

Steve Foley received the settlement he deserved, but why is the officer still employed? If a $5.5 million dollar mistake was made at most workplaces, someone would be fired. Maybe Metzger should be forced to play the rest of Foley's contract.  -  Sal, Golden Hill

Why is it that this off-duty police officer can return to being a police officer?  Steve Foley can't return as a Charger...and all he got was a 5.4 million dollar settlement for a career ending injury....in my opinion the city of Coronado should have paid out the wazoo!!!!and be renamed to foleyado!!!!!  -  suspekted, Chula Vista

The officer should be fired. We all know that if Foley were white, he would not be hobbled today. This type of behavior has to stop.  -  John, San Diego

In my opinion I would say that the football player should have gotten more money.  It is true what thay said.   The police officer is going back on duty and putting his uniform on and the football player lost his dream.  It is very unfair.  What I have noticed in San Diego is that the police officers do things without thinking.  They take agression with people they shouldn't and take less with people they should.  -  Giovanni, San Diego

I believe that the settlement amount is unfair and it seems that officer Mansker just got a time out or a slap on the wrist and that's it. I really question our legal system and wonder when Mr. Mansker will end yet another promising career, while he continues to pursue his.  -  Mrs. W, San Diego

Foley is a criminal.  The settlement is upside down. Who won?  -  LLF, San Diego

Foley could have gotten more. At least we don't have to change our name to "Foley Island."  -  Alan, Coronado

I know for a fact that if I, as a private citizen, shot another human being, it would be considered attempted murder. An "off-duty" police officer, in my opinion, is also a private citizen. He should be held to the same standard as anyone else.  $5.5 million is one thing, where are the criminal charges?  -  William, Scripps Ranch

I handled thousands of cases involving police for the City of San Antonio and I can tell you this settlement is rediculious. Foley would never have gotten a settlement from us. And the Police Officer could sue the city of Coronado himself. This case was totally mishandled by the City of Coronado. This was stupid.  -  James, San Diego

It is a disgrace that he gets rewarded for HIS wrongdoing!!!! He broke the law and now profits from his misdeeds. This country is going to hell in a handbasket.  -  Marie, Normal Heights

Foley's civil case is nothing but Foley trying to blame someone else for his bad decisions to drink and drive. A Police Officer is "on duty" 24 hours a day and Mansker tried to get a uniform Officer to stop Foley but things turned bad real quick. Mansker had no choice to do what he did to protect himself.  -  Rob, Ramona

I think the city of Coronado should be ashamed to have a officer that would do something illegal and keep him on duty. They admit wrong doing by settling out of court so the public will not hear how wrong the officer was. WHAT A JOKE and they should all be ashamed of themselves for allowing the officer to continue working in any way for the city and especially for the police force.  -  Todd, Pacific Beach

It seems like Foley manipulated the situation. He ended up getting paid 5.5 millions dollars for drunk driving!  Sure, the off duty officer could have handled it better, but the police do things everyday that violate a citizen's rights.  Nobody is paying those people huge settlements. Reminds me of the O. J. Simpson case.  -  Carl, City Heights

I don't think somebody who was driving drunk, jeopardizing the lives of others should get any money.  He caused his own medical issues & needs to learn to live with his choice to drive drunk that night.  -  L.H., South Park

I built the car for Foley.  The car is in my driveway right now -- I don't like what happened and I think that cop should lose his job as well, but don't let one cop make all cops bad.  I felt myself thinking that way???  -  Steve, Bonita

I am alarmed at the poor judgement of the Coronado police in allowing this officer to continue his employment. Clearly, officer Mansker lacks the judgement and restraint necessary for a position of authority.  -  Terry, San Diego

I think Mr. Foley should have gotten more money because his career is over.  Mr. Mansker should not be a police officer anymore. He is over zealous and should not be a one man police force. He needs to understand when not on duty and not in uniform he is like you and me. Too many police officers are getting away with just short of murder these days. With this tragedy and the road rage incident in Oceanside, these police officers need to have the law thrown back at them and made an example of -- to stop this "I am above the law" behavior.  -  Chris, El Cajon

In the case of Steve Foley vs. city of Coronado, I am surprised they kept a police officer that cost the city millions of dollars on staff. It is scary that crazy police officers can do so wrong and still get away with it, and city is stuck with the bill.  -  Ladan, Poway

It seems like Foley probably did not get quite enough money considering this injury could have killed him, and ended his career as well as disable him. I am also concerned that the off duty officer who shot Foley was reinstated.  It seems like he has a history of being a loose cannon, and being an officer he should understand restraint when pulling out a gun, as well as how scared 'celebrities" have to be of nutcases following them, possibly to kidnap and extrort money, or simply to kill them.  -  Dennis, Lakeside

I think it is deplorable that the city of Coronado settled for this amount. It should have been five times as much. Foley's career is over, figure the amount of money he would have made throughout the remainder of his career and add to that future medical bills, cost of living increases, etc. The court should have looked at it as if it were a divorce, afford him the kind of life he has grown accustomed to due to his work (footbal) and add those kind of expenses and see what a real settlement figure should look like. If he were of another ethnic group his settlement figure would have been much higher and the so-called off-duty officer should be in jail facing charges of attempted murder!  -  Michael, El Cajon

$5.5 million is not enough for what that reckless cop did.  Obviously, he hasn't received enough training but nowdays the majority of cops think they can do no wrong.  This kid is much too young to be a cop and the city of Coronado{which I've belong to for 46 years} should fire him before he screws up again!  -  Kurt, Coronado

Just so you get my perspective correct, I'm a white male, 50 yrs old, republican and an executive at a medical device firm. I think the Coronado Mayor's statement that the Steve Foley settlement was "fair" is disturbing. The settlement was anything but fair. Steve Foley is permanently disabled and the police officer gets off scot-free. Is there any wonder that black America is disenfranchised and suspicious of its government? That police officer should have been dismissed and never allowed to hold a license for a fire arm again.  -  Steven, Encinitas

It's unfortunate that Foley got shot, but his actions provoked the incident. He has a problem with authority and has a history of fighting with police.  $5.5 million is way too much. Coronado should have paid his hospital bill and for a get well card. That's it!  -  Roger, San Diego

That three million (after lawyer's fees) will probably be long gone when Foley kills someone while driving drunk. If we're lucky, in a few years, he'll be broke and get arrested holding up a liquor store. At least he might not harm anyone else that way.  -  Dan, Coronado

The Foley settlement was wrong! When someone uses a vehicle as a weapon, it does not matter if the victim of the weapon is a uniformed or off-duty policeman. I want off-duty policemen to protect me, since on-duty police staff are so thinly staffed and cannot always respond quickly. This ruling encourages off-duty policemen to observe and report crimes in progress, instead of protecting victims. What were the Coronado officials thinking??? This is a very dangerous precedent.  -  Robert, San Carlos

Mansker came off sounding a bit obsessed with stopping all possible drunk drivers in his off-duty time, but even if he works for the Coronado police for the rest of his life, he will not earn 5.5 million dollars. The admitted drunk driver-Foley is not disabled and could still work somewhere in the sports industry, but will never need to work again if he uses the award wisely. I'm not sure got the worse end of the deal here.  -  Scott, Lakeside

I think it is wrong of an off duty police officer to persue any person without back-up. Too many wacky people out there and how would you know they are for real!  -  Connie, Vista

Football players, like Steve Foley, make it in this world based on their athletic skill.   When you take that from them they have nothing.  No education, no job, no passion. That is why I was outraged to hear the officer who took everything away from this man walk free with his job. The city has made it clear, if you have a badge you can do whatever you want with no consequence. That includes gunning down a man with a nicer car than you.  -  Paul, Clairemont

I feel the result of the OFF DUTY COP shooting of a EX-Charger player is unfair. As a service member in the U.S Navy (station on North Island) I know when my job begins and when it ends. But "Mr.BAD A** Cop" took the law into his own hands when he shot Mr. Foley, so now the result is another San Diegan shot needlessly. It's bad enough when cops are shooting people that may have a weapon or seem to have a weapon, but now they are shooting any and everyone with or without a weapon. I don't feel safe anymore going to work knowing that "MR. BAD A** Cop" is out there waiting. There is not enough of money to compensate what Mr.Foley lost.  -  Donald, Escondido

  • ER Wait Times

We asked you about longer wait times in San Diego's Emergency Rooms.

Wait until you see Universal Health Care!!!!! This will seem like a walk in the park!!! Wise up people!  -  Brian, Solana Beach

What's the point in having insurance? Why pay a co-pay, when I could claim no insurance and have the same wait time as those who don't have insurance?  -  Brian, San Diego

Great story. Very balanced. This news was excellent, and just a year ago our governor was presenting health care reform and is now planning to cut $1.5 billion in Medi-Cal funding. How will that impact ER overcrowding, wait times and access for primary and emergency medical care to San Diego residents?  -  Robert, San Diego

It is pure fantasy to hope that "uninsured patients" without serious emergencies will show consideration for others by going to medical clinics instead of ERs. And let's not beat around the bush about who the vast majority of "uninsured patients" are. Long ER wait times for legal citizens represent yet another very real cost of illegal immigration.  -  Lawrence, San Marcos

Some patients are abusing the system, making ER, their personal clinic, impacting & crowding the ER, they should be asked to pay 50% of the cost, so they will think it over 100x to go to ER with non-emergency condition. Non-urgent patients should wait longer compared to the ones who really need to be treated immediately.  -  Anonymous

I believe the answer to the over-crowding at the Emergency Rooms is to have the Urgent Care centers open past 11:00 p.m.  If Urgent Care Centers were staffed 24/7, people who need "urgent" care but do not have a "true emergency" could be seen there. It is ridiculous that Urgent Care is only open during the day when physician's office are, or should be, available. I had my wound break open after the stitches were removed and was forced to go the the ER rather than Urgent Care because ALL the Urgent Care Centers were closed after 11:00 p.m. at a time when they are most needed. THAT IS THE ANSWER. IT IS A NO BRAINER.  -  Patti, San Diego

I think it would be in the best interest of the hospitals to open a small room as a clinic, treating those with minor issues. They are, after all, going to come to the ER anyway.  This would leave the ER Doctors for those patients in dire need.  -  Nanci, Santee

I believe the public should be educated exactly what the word "emergency" means. Too many times, waiting for hours & hours I have witnessed patients entering with urgent care or next day Dr visit. Lastly, I have worked many years and currently rely on county services for my health issues. I have shared many stories with a variety of people young & old. Remember the end of the movie "The Bucket List?" If only Morgan Freeman had been treated better, with more money he would have spent more time with his precious family. Makes you wonder, is it all about money?  I pray for our children.  -  Katherine, Chula Vista

If you want a real life example of the wait times, listen to the radio communications between paramedics and the base hospitals. The medics have to constantly switch channels locating a base hospital to accept their calls. The base hospital has to then verify the "vacancy" of the closest hospital...all taking precious time. The homeless use medics like a taxicab service. Hours long waits are the norm at most ER's.  -  Laine, Mira Mesa

We spend far more on healthcare than any other country in the world yet our access to quality care and our health outcomes continue to deteriorate. We have allowed the fat health insurance companies to profit by rationing care and controlling reimbursement too long. You can expect access to care and ER waits to continue deteriorating as our shortage of quality primary care doctors worsens. The only people receiving true quality care and access today are those who have a direct financial arrangement with their doctors via a concierge or fee based relationship. -  Patrick (MD), Coronado

  • Military Surrogate Moms

We asked you what you thought about military wives becoming surrogate moms.

I think its great that someone is actually willing to give up not only their body but time as well to help a family who is unable to have a baby. Military wives risk losing their husband while out on duty and I think they deserve everything they get!   I really do think it's awesome!  -  Vennessa, Chula Vista

Millitary wives pay taxes too.  -  Pamela, Camp Pendleton

What military wives do with their own bodies is nobody's business as long as it is legal. You can't put a price on the gift of a child to a couple that cannot conceive.  -  Stan, Mira Mesa

I'm fine with these women using taxpayer funded healthcare, so long as they aren't charging prospective parents for medical expenses and pocketing the money.  -  Justin, San Marcos

This topic should not be open to everyone.  Just like the lady said, we are the one's that have to take care of the men that protect our country.   We have to be mom and dad and everything so we are definately entitled to the benefits we get.   And if we can help or do one more thing for our fellow Americans and help them get a family, why not?   -  Pamela, Camp Pendleton

I am a child of a retired Navy chief, and my sister, uncles, and cousins all have active military families. I completely understand and can empathize with women whose husbands serve. But the idea that they have "earned" the right to have taxpayers cover their medical expenses when they become surrogate mothers is stealing from the very country their husbands risk their lives for. Medical benefits are for their immediate family, NOT as a way to earn extra income. If they need the money that badly, they should get jobs like the rest of the civilian population and stop stealing from taxpayers.  -  Joann, Mira Mesa

Our tax dollars should not be used to treat military wives who are surrogate mothers. Being a veteran myself, it was hard enough getting an appointment. Military spouses definitely do their part, but they never "served" their time. Just being a military spouse does not entitle you to special benefits afforded to the individual who gave their lives up for freedom.  -  Christina, Mission Hills

I think it is alright for military spouses to use medical benefits from the military while getting paid for the surrogacy. There could be worst things that these women are doing. All they are doing is providing something that one can not do on their own. Also they are trying to earn extra money for the families that really don't get paid that much as it is for everything the service member and family put up with. Thank you.  -  John, Oceanside

I think it is wonderful that these women are providing hope to childless couples. BUT their health care should be covered by the perspective parents, NOT the government. Their benefits are for themselves and their immediate families. In regards to it being "payment" for suffering through long deployments, these women were very aware of the trials and risks they were facing in marring a military man. If they choose to do this, it should MOST DEFINATELY be counted as income!  -  Christine, Valley Center

IT SEEMS THAT THEY HAVE FOUND A WAY TO HAVE CHILDREN WITHOUT PAYING. There should be a limit to how many children the goverment pays for. But until then some troop wives will keep abusing their benifits.  -  Sebastian, Chula Vista

As a Marine supporting a wife and 2 children, I am completely for military spouses using their benefits while acting as a surrogate. We work hard for little pay and any leg up a military family can get they deserve to take it. If we got an annual raise that was higher than the inflation rate maybe so many military wives wouldn't feel the need to be surrogates in the first place.  -  Josh, Serra Mesa

YOu are far from balanced news OR views.  -  Sheri, San Diego

I'm a navy wife. My husband had been gone for almost 6 months, came back for one month, and will now be gone for a year. I seriously thought about being a surrogate mom myself. I never thought they got paid much more than what it would take to be healthy and stress free. I won't be a surrogate, but I support other wives who do decide to do so. The well deserved military benefits should be treated the same as benefits from any other job. I had my daughter when I had benefits from a previous non-government job and including visits the whole thing cost less than $500. Being pregnant and giving the child to another couple has to be a wondrous feeling, but it must take so much out of a woman too. You can't put a price on that.  -  Nicole, Golden Hills

As a father, and military spouse, I understand the difficulty of raising children alone. It is difficult to work while my wife is deployed, so I support the choice of these surrogate moms. I do think they should pay income tax on the compensation they receive from the biological parents. All of us pay taxes to provide health care for military and their dependents.  -  Stu, Chula Vista

While these military wives are making money & charging the military for their care & not letting the surrogate parents pay for the medical bills, how many of our vets are going without care due to budget cuts ?  -  L.H., South Park

Being a military wife of 19 years and having been mom, dad and everything else while my husband was on deployment makes me feel like I can comment on this subject. My son is autistic and he is denied benefits due to a disability yet the money that could be used to help him is paying for a military wife to earn money as a 2nd income for her family. What happened to taking care of its own. Where does my son's needs come into play and get paid for by the military insurance?  -  Kolleen, San Diego

Militarysos.com was featured on your news and I'm a part of that board and it's a fantastic, wonderful board for support and yes we all have our own diverse opinions but that doesnt mean we are ALL against something. Just wanted to say. Yea! MSOS!!  -  Lovingmymarine22, Baytown

  • 4th Of July Plans

We asked you about high gas prices affecting your 4th of July plans.

My husband is in the Navy and his ship is going to be in San Francisco for the 4th of July. I was planning to drive from San Diego to San Francisco for that date but with the gas prices I decided to stay here and spend time with friends.  -  Maribel, Bonita

Gas prices have actually helped me appreciate all the great attractions San Diego has to offer. Here is a piece of advice take the money you save from not going on that expense gas vacation and get more for your buck in your neighborhood.  -  Larry, San Diego

I live in the north county, and need to drive to work downtown 10 times a month. It costs me 100 bucks to fill up. If there was a coaster or trolley that ran up and down the 15, I would use it in a second.  -  Chris, North County

High gas prices will not affect our Fourth of July celebration. Luckily we have a perfect view of many fireworks displays from our house and we plan on "cooking out" at home.  -  Jim

My family is staying in San Diego this holiday weekend. With the high gas prices and skyrocketing airfares, it's much better to brave the crowds at the beach and enjoy the San Diego sunshine.  -  Elizabeth, Pacific Beach

  • Hands-Free Devices

We asked for your views about the new law requiring hands-free devices.

The safety benefits are minimal or just don't exist - this is just another meaningless gesture that's supposed to convince us that our legislature is doing something useful.  -  Mark, El Cajon

I believe that if the law enforcement agencies in California really wanted to limit distractions on the road, they would ban cell phone usage period while driving!  Using a bluetooth device is not less of a distraction while driving, it's just a different form of a distraction.  -  Alana, Mission Valley

The new hands free law is a smoke screen to give police another reason to pull people over without warrant. Also it's just added revenue. The real safety concern here is using the phone while dialing or texting, which is not illegal.. Making it illegal to hold the phone to your ear? What about people trying to connect the blue tooth or scrambling for the earpiece while they're driving and the phone is ringing.. One step forward, two steps back. Say goodbye to your freedom as more and more of these types of ridiculous laws punish the millions of innocent citizens because of a few bad apples.  -  Mike, Escondido

If your reporter in going to report on the fines, she should get it right.  In San Diego County its $97 for the first offense and over $200 for the 2nd.  I saw it eariler on another channel.  -  Tim, El Cajon

Thank God the kite surfers aren't yakking on their cellphones.  What is this world coming too?  -  Richie, Coronado

Five simple words: Hangup the phone and drive!  -  Tony, La Jolla

I do not believe that the new hands free laws will prevent car accidents, mainly because drivers who drive while on the phone tend to get pulled into their conversation and away from drving.  -  Kooneyraza, Spring Valley

They should give out exemptions to people that actually know how to drive.  -  Barry, San Diego

The new "hands-free" rule will do NOTHING to make roads safer. The depth of the phone conversation is the problem. When a driver is trying to tell her daughter where to find the red bracelet, that driver does not "see" the road in front of her. She sees the layout of the bedroom and walks her daughter through the search. "No, not in that drawer ... do you see the small wooden box next to the hairbrush?"  Two hands on the wheel; NO eyes on the road!  -  Joe, Vista

Bad drivers are bad drivers, whether or not they are on the phone. This is just another misguided law that will likely have either the wrong effect or no effect at all--other than taking away yet another of our individual freedoms.  -  Lawrence, San Marcos

  • Gun Laws

We asked you about the Supreme Court's ruling on gun ownership.

The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States begins with "WE THE PEOPLE." Gun control is about people control. The politicians know that criminals don't care about laws so they can't control them, but they know they can control the law-abiding. The British knew this in 1775 when they tried to disarm our ancestors at Lexington and Concord which sparked the Revolutionary War. We'd still be under British control if the Brits were successful. This is the first step in the comeback of common sense and in turning this country around. There is a real problem with someone who is terrified of an inanimate object, which requires a human being to manipulate, much like a car. If you want to get down to facts, more people die in car accidents every year, but you don't see the corrupt politicians trying to ban them do you?  -  Andrew, Imperial Beach

I believe, even though I own no gun of my own, that gun owners should only be allowed to own one gun because of safety purposes.  -  Ghool, Spring Valley

Making hand guns illegal will only benefit black market gun sellers and criminals at the cost of the everyday "joe" who is buying a hand gun for sport or protection. This time the Supreme Court got it right.  -  Andy, Kearny Mesa

It's not about the gun. It's the person that is operating the gun. Guns are to protect ourselves against criminals that would intrude our lives and when he does so he currently has that question in the back of his mind wondering if the place he is going into has a gun. If this law took place then the intruder would be less likely to be worried about the individual having a weapon to defend against the intruder.  -  Nate, Menifee

I am very surprised by the Supreme Court's ruling. I think this ruling will cause many guns laws (that protect the people) to be challenged and possibly overturned. This will then lead to more violence. It is already known that firearms are the weapon of choice in 2/3 of all murders, and 1 in 4 Americans own a gun. If these gun laws are overturned, it will be a lot easier for the wrong type of people to get their hands on guns.  -  Shanda, Pacific Beach

Finally a Supreme Court ruling clarifying the framers intentions in penning the 2nd amendment!!  -  George, Oceanside

The latest ruling is long overdue. The founding fathers knew that an armed citizenry - independent of the government - is necessary in order to ensure that the government continues to serve the people. Law abiding citizens and their guns should never be controlled or registered unless engaged in criminal acts.  -  George, San Diego

Finally, the Supreme Court got it right on something.  This right is so fundamental to being an American.  Those of us who were born and raised in a family that used guns as a normal part of life have never quit understood the paranoia expressed by others.  -  David, Chula Vista

It's nice to see that a few bad apples aren't hurting it for everyone. Guns should be for people who won't abuse the right. Keep the laws tight, and the criminals away from the rope.  -  Chris, Penasquitos
