THE OJ INTERVIEW-YOU GUYS ARE DISGUSTING

UPDATE 11/20/06: Over the last few days I forwarded many of your messages and feedback emails on to FOX and am now thrilled to be able to report that News Corp/FOX made the wise decision to cancel the two hours of the Simpson Interview. For ongoing information be sure to watch Fox 6 News.

On Wednesday, November 15, Fox Broadcasting announced that on Monday, November 27th and Wednesday November 29th at 9pm (PST) both nights the FOX Network will be airing an interview with OJ Simpson.  This interview, conducted by ReganBooks Publisher Judith Regan will be in advance of the November 30th release of a new book by OJ Simpson called: If I Did It.

We understand that FOX broadcasting did not pay OJ Simpson to do this interview, but in the interest of full disclosure, ReganBooks is a subsidiary of HarperCollins, which is part of the News Corporation who also owns Fox Broadcasting and it has been alleged that Regan Books has paid Simpson $3.5M to write “If I did it”.

This book or this accompanying interview should not be a surprise to anyone who is vaguely familiar with Ms. Regan, who first became famous writing books such as, Little Girl Lost (Drew Barrymore) and I Can't Believe I Said That! (Kathy Lee Gifford).

Ms. Regan is arguably the most influential (in regards to number of books sold) publisher in the world and is responsible for many books on controversial figures such as Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern and of course, Jenna Jameson's best selling title,  How To Make Love Like a Porn Star.

Although we have not seen this book, nor have we seen any footage of this program, sources have told us that both the book and the Fox interview will contain explicit descriptions from Simpson of how the murders of Ron Goldman and OJ Simpson’s former wife, Nicole Brown were carried out and how the murderer left the scene of the crime without being caught.  This is the worst possible nightmare scenario for the “double-jeopardy” protection provided by our legal system.

As soon as the announcement about the OJ interview was announced, the phone lines and e-mails at FOX6 lit up…here are a few actual examples of the type of e-mails we have received (no names or e-mail addresses to protect privacy):

“You have got to be the lowest, sickest group of newscasters in the entire world.  How dare you insult the families of his victims and air such disgusting trash!  As a reporting station, you should be ashamed of the tactics used to get more viewers.  OJ is a hard core, cold-hearted piece of you-know-what and you are telling the whole world you approve”!

“I think to even acknowledge that O.J. is still out there, and flaunting the fact that he got away with murder is unforgivable.  Shame on you for giving him another moment in the spotlight”.

“I have been a Fox fan for years. I have trusted the honesty & standards of your reporting, so I have to ask - Have you lost your freakin heads??? Giving OJ television air time on "How I would Have done it (killing wife" What are you thinking?? I cannot find the words to express my outrage in your decision to do this. You have just gone lower than any other news station. I am bitterly disappointed in your decision”.

“You are the biggest bunch of idiotic, hypocritical, fools I have ever seen.  You are being punked and played…to air an interview with a liar and murderer and then allow him to tell everyone how he killed his wife and an innocent bystander, but then hide behind saying, “if I did it” , only allows a human scum to have publicity that no one should ever hear again.”

"I am disgusted by your decision to air the OJ Simpson "If I did It" story.  You are proving to the community that your only God is money!  Seriously, disgusting and everyone who works there should feel shame for working for such a scum bag company".

I have answered these e-mails privately, but I thought it was appropriate to take a moment and write this response to all of our viewers who are concerned about the decision by FOX to air this interview.

First, we at FOX6 do share your concerns about this type of program.  In fact, I have no doubt that we reacted much like everyone else did when we heard the news about the OJ interview on Tuesday (11/14) afternoon…we were shocked.

Like most of our viewers, I was very concerned that this "alleged" murderer (In February 1997 OJ Simpson was convicted of the murders of his wife and Goldman in a civil trial) would have any type of public forum and I strongly expressed our opposition to the program directly to the executives at the Fox Network multiple times since the announcement.  It is hard to believe that OJ can have a public voice, or worse, the court system would allow him to continue to escape justice.

Unfortunately, the OJ program is just another sad chapter and damning commentary on the period of time in which we currently reside.  We live in a world where the "personal lives of famous people" seem to be at the forefront of the public’s interest.  This is why Magazines such as People, US, The Star, National Enquirer, and other “gossip” trades sell so many copies each week, while Time, Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report and even Sport Illustrated continue to lose circulation.

The degrading of our society to the lowest common denominator is also why movies with offensive themes such as Borat, JackAss and SawIII have been #1 at the Movie Box-Office and why anti-establishment, anti-social video games such as Grand Theft Auto, which show police killed and women raped can sell many millions of videos games.  This is also why we are besieged with negative political ads.  Despite protestations to the contrary, they work, which is why they continue to proliferate and amazingly, get worse.

Remember, this OJ interview is NOT a FOX6 originated program.  As the FOX affiliate in San Diego, we are obligated to carry this program because we have a FOX Affiliate contract.  Frankly, it seems very likely based on the massive amount of publicity and attending emotion on this subject that a large number of viewers, despite their disgust and protestations, will watch this interview.

However, it is certainly each viewer’s right to “vote” on this program by not watching, just as our viewers have voted YES by watching our FOX6 in the Morning and our 10pm news…as well as many of our other great FOX shows and sports.

Currently, we are still investigating all of our options but if we do air these interviews, they will air without any local commercials and they will contain PSA’s to support Victims Rights and Abused Women’s Organizations.  IMPORTANT: FOX 6 IS NOT MAKING ANY MONEY FROM THIS PROGRAM, IN FACT, WE ARE LOSING MONEY WITH NO COMMERCIALS OR ADVERTISEMENTS.

We would suggest that you make your feelings known by contacting FOX NETWORK directly at: (310) 369-3066, or askfox@fox.com

Let’s speak frankly, no matter what “spin” is put on this interview, the mere fact that OJ is able to have this type of national forum is both deplorable and disgusting.  At the very best, it is very disconcerting.  I can only hope that through OJ’s apparently overwhelming personal conceit and arrogance and his seemingly unquenchable desire to stay in the spotlight, he will slip up during the interview and say something that will lead to some type of justice for his crimes.

However, no matter what happens or to put it in his words, does not happen to OJ in this mortal life, one fact is very clear.  Just like every person who has lived on earth, someday OJ Simpson will stand at the pleasing bar of God, and at that time no amount of lies or clever, high-paid lawyers will be able to prevent him from being judged correctly and fairly for his actions.

My wife and I have just pledged never to watch another Fox TV broadcast, ever. Fox’s decision to air the O.J. Simpson “If I Did It” piece in November is a disgusting act of sensationalism allowing a civil jury convicted party to taunt his victims, the legal system, and those of the general public who sustain a belief in our legal system. We are deeply offended at the moral absence of Fox employees who have provide a TV soapbox for this purpose and the subsequent hype of the book of the same topic.

Fox – never again in Orange County.

No sense in shooting the messenger here as you are doing what you have been told to do.  But this is about one thing and one thing only, MONEY!  Garbage is garbage no matter what day of the week you take it to the curb.  Nobody really cares about OJ anymore.  This is old, old, old news that ran out of gas years ago.  But in a time when you can hear "God Damn it" on prime time TV, but "***" is referred to as "The N Word", it's no wonder that the airwaves are full of this crap.  It seem as though network executives sit locked up in a room trying to invent new ways to push the absurdity envelope in order to be the most titillating network on TV.

There will come a day when the social porn they are trying to cram down our throats will gag us and we will puke it back all over them.  And eventually one of the big networks will fall.  As they go down in flames they will be crying like the Dixie Chicks and blaming all the conservatives for their demise saying, “You don't believe in the freedom of speech."  And on that day our reply will be," Sure we believe in the freedom of speech and we are exercising it now by not watching and encouraging others to not watch you.  You but you have forgotten who your customers are and we will exercise our rights to forget you."

Wise up!  This is nothing more than Jerry Springer in an Armani suit!

The media certainly has its own standards.  NBC feels an obligation to edit out Scripture references from the Saturday morning versions of Veggie Tales (they might offend folk who don't share the same Judeo-Christian beliefs).  Yet, Fox is willing to assist in publicizing the thoughts and statements of O.J. Simpson.

Many many many people may watch this interview as you indicate.  I assure you our family will not.  This is Sweeps Season, yes??

As disgusting as O.J. Simpson is, Fox 6 is doing the right thing and is simply the vehicle to show what could be a monumental event on television--an acquitted defendant telling people that he committed the crimes for which he was exonerated.

After the OJ verdict divided our country, this show could very well shine a light on this event and perhaps enlighten those who believe(d) that the LA cops framed him. I believe that we will see what a polygraph test showed prior to his jury trial--that he killed two innocent people.

Frankly, I think Fox 6 and the other numerous Fox affiliates nationwide are doing a service to its viewers by clearly proving what most of us already know, but now in his OWN words--OJ killed Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown in cold blood and he does not deserve to be walking the streets as a free man.

More information is always better than less, even if the killer is getting paid to confess on national TV.  By the way, the ratings will be huge, proving that people want to hear OJ tells all how he did and how he got away with it.

Everyone needs to climb off of there high horse regarding the FOX network and affiliates. VIEWERS you have the off button on your televisions. YES everyone know O.J. killed his wife. Now matter how much you boycott the network the show will still be aired. Whether or not he is being paid for this no really knows. Stop and think.... he has two kids to answer to. They are old enough to know how to find the truth themselves. Stop harassing the FOX.

I am now and will continue to be a loyal Fox viewer.  I will, however, exercise my right not to watch OJ Simpson's interview.  As an African-American, I that the division that this man has caused within my community has extremely negative.  Anything else that he does only worsens things.  However, like everything in the past, such as slavery, lynchings and discrimination, we as a people will overcome this.  What we must understand is that with freedom comes responsibility.  And that is something that I have noticed as an American, that is beginning to be lost within the community of the media.  Fox6 has been honest with its viewers and I am confident that they will continue to do so.  So, OJ interview or not, I will continue to be a loyal viewer.

Why cant you do the same, a program without any commercials (hurray for that!) for someone who is doing something good and positive for our country and needs the media exposure.  I think the people writing in here are missing the point. What Mr. Simpson or any other murderer has to say is worthy of public airing.
If Fox offered to share this interview with other networks I'm sure they would all 'get on board'. I suggest we put the interview on all the major networks like the President's State of the Union Address. That way everyone will get bored after a few minutes and switch to something more intriguing like the cartoon network.
This is all free publicity to promote a murderers' book. I understand Mr. Simpson was paid a 3.5 USD advance and I am sure guaranteed a percentage of sales.
What we should all be asking and outraged about is why the court system has allowed a murderer to live a life of luxury when owing millions to the families of his murder victims. How much of this additional income will go towards paying off his monetary debt to the civil law suit he lost?
I would like to know how the murderer has avoided any penalties at all.
OK, so he got away with murder in the criminal trial. He did lose in the civil trial though, that should open the door for say, denying the murder victims' civil rights.

I think this is an excellent exposure of who O. J. Simpson really truly is. His is so money hungry, that he has forgotten the fact that he is supposed to be 'mourning' the loss of Nicole Simpson, and showing respect for the horrific death of R. Golden. Instead, he took a few million to embarass his children, insult the families, and sit up and act like the murderous phsycopath he is...and all for money and what he in his sick tormented mind,...another 'innocent' plea. Go ahead and show it and let all see what a stooge he truly is...let his Children and family go after him.

This letter is in reference to the program with Simpson later this month.  Please allow me to preface this by stating that I watch fox more then any other station. I watch the local, fox 6 and fox news. I enjoy Prison Break and one of my favorite shows is 24 and of course, Tuesday nights are family nights and we watch American Idol. Oh, did I mention I love football and baseball and I watch them on my local fox station.

If you show this program with Simpson, I will never ever watch anything that has to do with fox or any affiliate again. The man in my opinion is a killer who got away with murder. I don’t think that I am the only one who thinks that. I have given this a lot of thought and I’m sure I can find something else to watch on TV other than the shows I enjoy on your station.  I know that you have a contractual obligation to “big Fox”, but you also have a say. It’s up to you. Please make the right decision for San Diego.

If you boycott every channel that airs something you do not like, then you'll have nothing to watch. On second thought, perhaps that is a good thing. This garbage involves the deaths of two innocent people and continuing suffering of their families and countless others.  How totally gross and low. Here's how it ends up at our house: Fox and Fox 6 will run the show. We will not watch it. We will continue to watch Fox and Fox 6 if there is something we want to see. But we will not admit to that in any ratings survey ever. I will find out who advertised on the show (if anyone does) and I will make it clear to them that I will not buy their products ever again. Your decision not to have sponsors is obviously intended to protect yourself from the obvious backlash this program will cause, and to protect a sponsor from a boycott of their products. However I intend to pick several local sponsors that advertise on your channel and boycott their products in the hopes that it will put pressure on the station to not air this interview. There has to be accountability for this kind of despicable act by O.J. and Fox's total lack of good judgment by showing it. How cold that people have to justify FOX's bad decision...which they have now wisely changed. If people didn't complain and voice their opinion, then where would we be??

Follow-up to my earlier message.

Mr. Murdoch's decision to not air the program, or support the book, was a breath of fresh air. My opinion of the FOX Network was restored(to a point).

However, the local FOX 6 management, who said they were obliged to air it, showed very little backbone. It was the chorus of sponsors and other broadcasters, who were willing to stand up to the Network, and the viewing audience that brought this change to light.

No help, came from Fox 6 here in San Diego.

Sharon Jahr said it all.

And I want to add:  Congratulations to Fox 6 for pulling the outrageious OJ programming.  You have shown courage and appreciation of your viewing audience.

Morry Stillwell said:

XETV can not get off the hook because the Network realized that the OJ interview was not proper for it's network.

In an exchange of messages, XETV managment lied and said they were required to air the show.  Other FOX stations in the Midwest had refused to air the show so there was no such requirment.

Shame on XETV.  Unless this station makes an explanation of their lie I urge all to still boycott the station and its sponsors.

Gerry Burger said:

XETV has a legal obligation to their network FOX. Shame on people like Morry who only think for themselves. And spit out something useless like boycott the station. Why? Because XETV almost aired a P.O.S interview? No one lied.. XETV's managment had to explain for the best of their company the legal binding they were in. EVERYONE is refusing to air it. Not just the midwest my friend. It is the uproar and unsettling feeling it presents in the people is why it is not being aired. So youre gonna hold up the midwest as heroes for saying no? How do you know XETV didn't disagree as much as the next station? Kenneth says they have no backbone.. blah blah.. get a life, go outside, do something rather than stay at home and *** and moan about how this station is ruining the lives of everyone. They're NOT gonna air it.. now find something else to whine about.

I read your explanation for not broadcasting the murderer's interview.  You are still offensive.  You wrote that what you wanted to do is just part of our culture these days.

I am part of our culture.  The murderer does not fit in my culture!

Your arrogance and greed is beyond any kind of reprieve.

Prostitutes are also part of our culture: for sure FOX and your people like King and O'Reilly have nothing on the prostitutes.  They and you are models for them.

All of you hypocrites, I am tired of all the sick narrow- minded people out there!  All I see is closet bigots expressing their hatred for black people again.  I pray that the Wrath of God come down on all of you, hypocrites.  If O.J. were white, you would be saying "He is innocent and was framed by a crooked police."  I feel sorry for the death of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman.  But Nicole was involved with DRUGS, which bring very dangerous and deadly people into your life.

The Civil Court verdict was just to appease to racist white people and the families involved at O.J. expense.  Unfortunately, corruption is at the highest level of government.

In summary, I feel O.J. is trying to express his innocence after his bad ordeal.  His case has always been a BLACK vs. WHITE issue - RACISM.  I admitted his story should show tact, and you are innocent until proven guilty.   Plus you have to be proven guilty without reasonable doubt to protect all Americans.

P.S.  Black People do go to Heaven like white people!
